Chewing gum is a product that has surprisingly embedded itself into our culture, accompanying us from childhood to adulthood. However, few people are aware of the long and fascinating history of this popular treat.
The Beginnings of Chewing Gum
The earliest forms of chewing gum were known in ancient civilizations. Historical records indicate that the Greeks chewed resin from birch tree trunks, while the Maya preferred natural gum derived from the sap of the sapodilla tree, a substance still used today to make “chicle” gum. In the 19th century, this tradition evolved into industrial production. In 1848, John Curtis began producing gum at home and, two years later, manufactured paraffin-based gum. The year 1869 marked a milestone in chewing gum history when American dentist William Wrigley Semple patented an official method of production.
Chewing Gums From Our Childhood
In Poland, many of us nostalgically remember chewing gums such as Donald, Turbo, or colorful gumballs. Each had its distinctive flavor and was an inseparable part of childhood. They tasted sweet and intense, although the flavor didn’t last long. Moreover, they were often packaged with collectible pictures that we traded or shared with friends.
Modern Ingredients in Chewing Gum
Today’s chewing gums differ slightly from the ones we remember from childhood. While they remain tasty and popular, their composition has evolved to adapt to new technologies and market demands. Interestingly, paraffin continues to be an ingredient that can be found in some chewing gums.
Why paraffin? It is used as a softening and stabilizing agent, helping the gum retain its elasticity for a longer time. For many, it might be surprising that this material, primarily associated with the candle industry, has a place in a product as everyday as chewing gum.
The Evolution of Chewing Gum
Chewing gum has come a long way from natural resins to today’s advanced formulas, often protected by trade secrets. Even though modern gums include ingredients that we might not expect, they remain a staple of our daily lives. However, as with any consumable product, moderation is key to maintaining health.
