Paraffin and Yachts – The Hidden Role of Paraffin Waxes in Modern Composite Manufacturing 25 July 2025

Paraffin waxes are commonly associated with the candle and grave light industries. However, they also play an important role in advanced manufacturing processes — including in the production of composite yachts and boats.

During the lamination of molds using polyester resins, as well as in the application of gelcoats, release agents are used — and their main component is often paraffin wax. These waxes enable:

• perfectly smooth surface finishes,

• easy release of molds from finished parts (such as hulls and decks),

• increased durability of molds and resistance to damage,

• improved aesthetic quality of gelcoat surfaces.

Paraffin waxes can also be used as additives in gelcoats, where they help regulate and support various technological processes.

Yacht manufacturing today is a highly advanced composite technology. Paraffin is its silent ally — present in many steps of production, though invisible in the final product.
